Early in my career, I packed chemical suit bags for the military. The rule was clear: if a single component was missing, someone didn’t go home. You’re not just filling bags; you’re envisioning the person opening that bag in a moment of crisis. Their safety depends entirely on your diligence.
We hang a first-aid kit on the wall and assume we’re prepared—until an emergency reveals iodine that expired a decade ago and bandages that have turned to dust. “It’s fine” is almost always code for “no one has looked closely enough.” And “fine” catastrophically fails the moment a system crashes, a pipe bursts, or an audit exposes the gaps we chose to ignore.
For over 20 years, I’ve managed both the built and virtual environment—from 2.5M square-foot portfolios to mission-critical federal initiatives. Whether implementing an Archibus IWMS or building a custom database, I treat data as critical infrastructure.
In a mechanical room or a SQL schema, accuracy is an act of empathy. It’s the invisible handshake between those who build systems and those whose safety, productivity, and success depend on them later.
